Abstract

Abstract : There is a change in the recent demographic dynamics on the increase of elderly population, which most of them presents weaknesses regarding physical and/or cognitive health, there is also a demand for long-term care in elderly institutions, and considering these facts, this present study aims to investigate how the elderly institutions may have improvements and influence the well-being of the elderly residents, from its architectural design. The research was carried out in Criciúma, state of Santa Catarina and has the overall goal to contribute to the elderly institutions architecture, based on analysis institutions from Criciúma, according to legal, bibliographic criteria, architectural and from the viewpoint of the users. For this, it was considered: legislation and current standards in 2013, the federal, state and municipal levels; current architectural references from other countries and concepts of environmental psychology, covering the influence of environment on behavior of its users and vice versa. Thus, it was made up the main issue research: What contributions to architectural design can be identified from the assessing architectural spatial configurations in elderly institutions in Criciúma? It was used various methods, such as: exploratory visits, environment systematic observations and behavior, game images and words, interviews and wish poems, the environments were characterized, users and activities in three from the seven, elderly institutions from the municipality. Having the data, it was tried to respond also to the secondary research questions about the functionality of Architectural Design to these institutions and about the contributions to the elderly institutions reality in Criciúma can bring to the architects. The obtained results allowed to list general contributions to architecture design, which can assist in the elderly institutions design and improvement of future projects.
