A teoria crítica de alexis de Tocqueville

Abstract

Nessa dissertação investiga-se se e como a filosofia de Alexis de Tocqueville pode ser incluída dentro da teoria crítica, assim compreendida a tradição filosófica que pretende fazer um diagnóstico de época orientado aos potenciais emancipatórios imanentes à sociedade, assim como aos obstáculos a essa emancipação. O fio condutor da dissertação são três interpretações concorrentes sobre a ideia de liberdade que permeia a obra do liberal francês: negativa, republicana e social. É discutida a compatibilidade dessas concepções de liberdade com as democracias de massa modernas e a relação delas com os demais conceitos fundamentais da análise sociológica de Tocqueville, como aristocracia, dominação, interesse bem compreendido, religião, individualismo, entre outras. Ao final, mostra-se como esses conceitos podem servir para fazer um diagnóstico da sociedade brasileira atual da perspectiva da ideia de liberdade social, que está na base de uma eticidade democrática, mas que é obstaculizada por dinâmicas sociais de origem aristocrática ou autoritária.

Abstract: The present dissertation investigates if and how the philosophy of Alexis de Tocqueville can be considered within the critical theory, thus understood the philosophical tradition that intends to make a diagnosis of the times oriented toward the emancipatory potentials immanent to the society, as well as the obstacles to this emancipation. The guiding theme of the dissertation are three competing interpretations about the idea of freedom in the work of the French liberal: negative, republican and social. The compatibility of these conceptions of freedom with the modern mass democracies is discussed, and also their relation to Tocqueville?s other fundamental concepts for sociological analysis, such as aristocracy, domination, interest well understood, religion, individualism, among others. Finally, it is shown how these concepts may be useful to make a diagnosis of contemporary Brazilian society from the perspective of the idea of social freedom, which is the basis of a democratic ethical life, but which is hindered by social dynamics of aristocratic or authoritarian origin.
