O imaginário escravista em algumas imagens da obra de Debret: possibilidades de leitura

Abstract

Esta dissertação aborda a representação das pessoas negras na obra do artista neoclássico Jean-Baptiste Debret. Este chegou ao Brasil como integrante da Missão Francesa, em 1816, durante o período do Império, e teve uma importância inegável na elaboração do imaginário que contribuiu com o processo de \"invenção do Brasil\" e de \"construção da civilidade pela estética\" numa perspectiva eurocêntrica. Para os fins desta pesquisa foram \"retiradas\" algumas imagens dos livros didáticos das séries finais do ensino fundamental, e oferecidas para leitura dos/as estudantes do 9º ano da Escola Pero Vaz de Caminha, onde atuo como docente. Suas narrativas foram analisadas no intuito de compreender o que as imagens de Debret, presentes nos livros escolares, ensinam sobre as relações étnico-raciais na contemporaneidade. Deste modo, os capítulos deste estudo buscam contribuir para a reflexão e construção de abordagens pedagógicas antirracistas, que reflitam sobre a potência das imagens das obras de Debret na naturalização dos papéis e nas relações que envolvem os/as sujeitos negros/as a partir do contexto da escravidão. Para este fim, é realizado um exercício de \"entrenarrativas\" que contempla o olhar estrangeiro, o olhar dos/as estudantes e meu olhar enquanto antropóloga e docente da disciplina de Arte, além de desnaturalizar as representações das pessoas negras nas imagens de Debret e os discursos que as tratam como documentos visuais.

Abstract : This dissertation deals with the representation of black people in the work of the neoclassical artist Jean-Baptiste Debret. During the empire period, in 1816, Dabret arrived in Brazil as a member of the French Mission and had an undeniable importance in the elaboration of the imaginary that contributed to the process of \"invention of Brazil\" and of \"construction of civility by aesthetics\" in a eurocentric perspective. For the purposes of this research, some images were \"withdraw\" from the textbooks of the final grades of elementary school, and offered for reading to the students of the 9th grade of the Pero Vaz de Caminha School, where I work as a teacher. Their narratives were analyzed in order to understand what the images of Debret, present in the school books, teach about ethnic-racial relations in contemporary times. For this purpose, the chapters of this study seek to contribute to the reflection and construction of antirracist pedagogical approaches that reflect on the power of the images of Debret's works in the naturalization of social roles and in the relationships that involve black subjects at the context of slavery. For present purpose, an exercise is carried out \"between narratives\" that contemplates the foreign gaze, the gaze of the students and my gaze as an anthropologist and teacher of the Art discipline, besides denaturalizing the representations of black people in Debret's images and the speeches that treat them as visual documents.
