Ciudad del Este em tradução: interseções de linguagens, espaços e histórias do tempo presente

Abstract

A presente tese é uma análise descritiva dos espaços de tradução (CRONIN; SIMON 2014) e dos lugares de memória (NORA, 1993) de Ciudad del Este, importante centro comercial transnacional localizado na fronteira com o Brasil. Este trabalho propõe um olhar transversal sobre a espacialidade urbana da cidade sendo esta transversalidade estudada com base nos Estudos da Tradução, entrelaçado a saberes de diferentes campos, como a Antropologia, Geografia, Linguística e História. A partir da busca pela compreensão dos efeitos causados pelas práticas de tradução em contextos multilíngues da cidade, a tese mapeia, descreve e analisa os espaços de tradução e os lugares de memória de Ciudad del Este sob a ótica da história da tradução cultural. A abordagem teórica em relação à tradução cultural é desenvolvida nas perspectivas de Asad (1986), Simon (1995), Rutherford (1996), Pym (2017), Souza (2004), Rocha (2008), Gentzler (2018) e Trivedi (2019), destacando o embasamento conceitual da tradução cultural de Bhabha (2014). Ainda a respeito do arcabouço teórico que constitui os estudos sobre espaço e memória, acerquei-me as abordagens de Simon (2012, 2014, 2018, 2019), Cronin e Simon (2014), Santaella (2007), Lopes (2012), Browinlie (2016), Halbwachs (2003), Stupiello (2014), Da Silva (2016), Pollak (1989, 1992) e Gondar (2008) para compreender os processos de proximidade, distanciamento e transmissão memorial que movem as interações socioculturais dos espaços tradução e dos lugares de memória em Ciudad del Este. No que concerne à metodologia, a pesquisa concilia diferentes procedimentos de geração e coleta de dados alinhados à história oral, tomando como recorte espaço-temporal os espaços de tradução e os lugares de memórias situados no Bairro Centro da cidade leste do Paraguai no período compreendido entre 2018 e 2020. Sobre a metodologia em história oral, dialoguei com as perspectivas de Meihy (1994, 2005, 2011), Portelli (1997), Freitas (2006), Delgado (2010), Meihy e Ribeiro (2011), Ferreira (2012), Cunha (2012), Badia (2015) e Seawrigt (2016 e 2017) a fim de tecer recursos necessários para definir os tipos de entrevistas e as etapas das entrevistas a serem cumpridas. No que se refere ao corpus documental desta pesquisa, ele é constituído a partir das entrevistas sobre a espacialidade do ambiente urbano da cidade, tendo em vista os procedimentos de transcrição, textualização e transcriação dos registros orais. Partindo da discussão dos efeitos causados pelas práticas de tradução em diversas espacialidades da cidade esteña, os registros das fontes orais permitiram detectar nas entrelinhas das narrativas a existência de outras fontes históricas que pudessem estar vinculadas às microhistórias da cidade, tais como atas institucionais e registros documentais privados. Nesse sentido, proponho com o paradigma da tradução-descrição etnográfica (ARAÚJO FERREIRA, 2014), a discussão e a análise dos resultados desses espaços urbanos, refletindo os momentos históricos em que os movimentos das línguas foram fundamentais para reverter questões políticas e culturais enraizadas na Ciudad del Este. Resultam da pesquisa considerações sobre como as interações sociais promovem espaços de tradução e lugares de memórias nem sempre harmônicos e simétricos e, portanto, capazes de fomentar distintas espacialidades urbanas em Ciudad del Este. Dessa forma, a tese contribui para visibilizar a discussão em torno de cidades em tradução, onde a tradução pode ser a lente reveladora para pesquisar a história cultural em uma ampla gama de contextos urbanos latino-americanos.

Abstract: This thesis is a descriptive analysis of the spaces of translation (CRONIN; SIMON 2014) and the places of memory (NORA, 1993) of Ciudad del Este, an important transnational commercial center located in the border with Brazil. This work proposes a transversal look at the urban spatiality of the city, and this transversality is studied based on Translation Studies, intertwined with knowledge from different fields, such as Anthropology, Geography, Linguistics and History. In order to understand the effects caused by translation practices in multilingual contexts in the city, this thesis maps, describes and analyzes the spaces of translation and the places of memory in Ciudad del Este from the perspective of the history of cultural translation. The theoretical approach in relation to cultural translation is developed in the perspectives of Asad (1986), Simon (1995), Rutherford (1996), Pym (2017), Souza (2004), Rocha (2008), Gentzler (2018) and Trivedi (2019), highlighting Bhabha's (2014) conceptual grounding of cultural translation. Still regarding the theoretical framework that constitutes the studies on space and memory, I observed the approaches of Simon (2012, 2014, 2018, 2019), Cronin and Simon (2014), Santaella (2007), Lopes (2012), Browinlie (2016), Halbwachs (2003), Stupiello (2014), Da Silva (2016), Pollak (1989, 1992) and Gondar (2008) to understand the processes of proximity, distancing and memorial transmission that move the sociocultural interactions of translation spaces and places of memory in Ciudad del Este. Regarding methodology, the research conciliates different procedures of data generation and collection aligned to oral history, taking as a space-time cutout the spaces of translation and the places of memories located in the Centro neighborhood of the eastern city of Paraguay in the period between 2018 and 2020. About the methodology in oral history, I dialogued with the perspectives of Meihy (1994, 2005, 2011), Portelli (1997), Freitas (2006), Delgado (2010), Meihy and Ribeiro (2011), Ferreira (2012), Cunha (2012), Badia (2015) and Seawrigt (2016 and 2017) in order to build the necessary resources to define the types and stages of interviews to be accomplished. Regarding the documentary corpus of this research, it is constituted from the interviews about the spatiality of the urban environment of the city, in view of the transcription, textualization and transcription procedures of the oral records. Starting from the discussion of the effects caused by the practices of translation in several spatialities of the esteña city, the records of the oral sources allowed us to detect between the lines of the narratives the existence of other historical sources that could be linked to the microhistories of the city, such as institutional minutes and private documentary records. In this sense, I propose with the paradigm of ethnographic translation-description (ARAÚJO FERREIRA, 2014), the discussion and analysis of the results of these urban spaces, reflecting the historical moments in which the movements of languages were fundamental to reverse political and cultural issues rooted in Ciudad del Este. Resulting from the research are considerations about how social interactions promote spaces of translation and places of memories that are not always harmonious and symmetrical and, therefore, capable of fostering distinct urban spatialities in Ciudad del Este. In this way, the thesis contributes to make visible the discussion around cities in translation, where translation can be the revealing lens to research cultural history in a wide range of Latin American urban contexts.
