Entre encontros e conflitos: um estudo da presença jesuítica na China apartir da Asia extrema do Padre Antônio de Gouvea (século XVII)

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a presença jesuítica na China, estabelecida na década de 1580 após os jesuítas receberem permissão para residir permanentemente no território Ming. Os missionários da Companhia de Jesus, com o intuito de fortalecer relações de confiança para obterem mais chances de converter a elite letrada chinesa, empregaram como estratégia o esforço para aprender a língua e a cultura da China. Além disso, através do método de ?acomodação?, adotando as vestimentas dos funcionários confucionistas e utilizando os avanços nas ciências e tecnologias europeias como uma forma de transmitir a mensagem do Cristianismo. Com isso, os jesuítas foram durante os séculos XVI e XVII os indivíduos ocidentais com maior grau de conhecimento do mundo chinês. A partir da \"Asia Extrema\" do Padre António de Gouvea, analisamos as informações que o missionário apresenta para o mundo europeu sobre a história e cultura chinesa, bem como a história do projeto de missionação promovido pela Companhia de Jesus. Para compreender os complexos mundos em que Gouvea estava inserido, partimos de uma análise da Companhia de Jesus como uma instituição eclesiástica global, com fortes laços com as Coroas ibéricas em expansão ultramarina através do Padroado. Nesse sentido, traçamos comparações com os métodos e estratégias empregados pelos jesuítas nos territórios em que havia a presença do Padroado português, como Brasil, Índia, China e Japão. Os jesuítas ocupavam importantes posições de poder e prestígio tanto nessas sociedades como na Europa, e nos legaram um rico corpo documental com descrições e seus julgamentos sobre essas culturas que buscavam realizar a conquista espiritual.

Abstract: The present work has as its object of study the Jesuit presence in China, established in the 1580s after the Jesuits received permission to reside permanently in the Ming territory. The missionaries of the Society of Jesus, with the aim of strengthening relationships of trust to obtain more chances of converting the Chinese literate elite, employed as a strategy the effort to learn the language and culture of China. Furthermore, through the ?accommodation? method, they adopted the way of life of the Confucian officials and used advances in European science and technology as a way to convey the message of Christianity. As a result, the Jesuits were, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Western individuals with the greatest degree of knowledge of the Chinese world. From Father António de Gouvea's \"Asia Extrema\", we analyze the information that the missionary presents to the European world about Chinese history and culture, as well as the history of the missionary project promoted by the Society of Jesus. To understand the complex worlds in which Gouvea was inserted, we start from an analysis of the Society of Jesus as a global ecclesiastical institution, with strong ties with the Iberian Crowns expanding overseas through the Padroado. To achieve this objective, we made comparisons with the methods and strategies used by the Jesuits in territories where the Portuguese Padroado was present, such as Brasil, India, China and Japan. The Jesuits occupied important positions of power and prestige both in these societies and in Europe, and they bequeathed to us a rich body of documents with descriptions and their judgments about these cultures that they sought to achieve a spiritual conquest.
