Uma leitura imagética feminista da filosofia política ocidental

Abstract

Em minha tese, desenvolvo um método denominado ?Leitura Imagética Feminista?, que visa orientar o estudo do cânone da filosofia política ocidental, contribuindo para uma revisão feminista da história da filosofia e para a construção da História das Filósofas. Com base nesse método, analiso três imagens centrais na filosofia política ocidental: a Fábula da Barriga, a Metáfora do Corpo Político Masculino e a Ficção do Estado de Natureza e do Contrato Social. Ao longo dos capítulos, identifico e analiso essas imagens, relacionando-as com as filosofias políticas canônicas de suas respectivas épocas. Na filosofia antiga, examino as obras de Platão e Aristóteles; na filosofia medieval, foco em Santo Agostinho, São Tomás de Aquino e João de Salisbury; e na filosofia moderna, analiso os pensamentos de John Knox, Jean Bodin, Robert Filmer, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke e Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Através dessa análise de imagens e conceitos filosóficos nos textos de filosofia política ocidental, investigo como, historicamente, os corpos masculinos foram representados como ideais e superiores aos corpos femininos, destacando essa tendência repetitiva ao longo da história da filosofia política ocidental. Essa superioridade perpassa não apenas pela dicotomia hierárquica entre intelecto e corpo, e entre homem e mulher, mas também pela superioridade da alma, da força física, da virilidade, da sensibilidade e da imaginação. A partir dessa suposta superioridade, os filósofos criaram imagens fundantes do pensamento político ocidental, exaltando sua própria potência (pro)criativa para mascarar a inveja dos sentidos metafóricos atribuídos ao papel reprodutivo dos corpos femininos, apresentados como inferiores, estéreis e ?deformados?. A fundação dos espaços políticos reflete a imagem de um corpo do sexo masculino e suas características viris, que teme se tornar ?afeminado?. Neste sentido, argumento que, em grande medida, a filosofia política ocidental é mais imaginativa e menos conceitual do que comumente se admite. Com a Leitura Imagética Feminista, aponto elementos negligenciados pelo que denomino ?História da Filosofia da Mente Caminhante?: as imagens, a imaginação, os corpos e as mulheres. Como contraponto, apresento as contribuições de filósofas como Christine de Pizan, Marie de Gournay, Mary Astell, Catharine Macaulay e Margaret Cavendish. Essas contribuições revelam questões e problemas filosóficos que foram apagados da história da filosofia ocidental, especialmente aqueles relacionados às ideias do pensamento patriarcal e à contra-argumentação política das filósofas. Esse apagamento não apenas marginaliza as mulheres da política e da filosofia, mas também empobrece a própria compreensão da filosofia política ocidental. Portanto, a recuperação e valorização dessas vozes e corpos são importantes para uma perspectiva mais completa, democrática e criativa da história da filosofia.

Abstract: In my thesis, I develop a method called ?Feminist Imagistic Reading?, which aims to guide the study of the canon of Western political philosophy, contributing to a feminist revision of the history of philosophy and the construction of the History of Female Philosophers. Based on this method, I analyze three central images in Western political philosophy: the Fable of the Belly, the Metaphor of the Male Political Body, and the Fiction of the State of Nature and the Social Contract. Throughout the chapters, I identify and analyze these images, relating them to the canonical political philosophies of their respective eras. In ancient philosophy, I examine the works of Plato and Aristotle; in medieval philosophy, I focus on St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and John of Salisbury; and in modern philosophy, I analyze the thoughts of John Knox, Jean Bodin, Robert Filmer, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Through this analysis of images and philosophical concepts in Western political philosophy texts, I investigate how, historically, male bodies have been represented as ideal and superior to female bodies, highlighting this repetitive trend throughout the history of Western political philosophy. This supposed superiority extends not only through the hierarchical dichotomy between intellect and body, and between man and woman, but also through the superiority of the soul, physical strength, virility, sensitivity, and imagination of man. Based on this supposed superiority, philosophers created foundational images of Western political thought, exalting their own (pro)creative power to mask the envy of the metaphorical meanings attributed to the reproductive role of female bodies, presented as inferior, sterile, and ?deformed?. The foundation of political spaces reflects the image of a male body and its virile characteristics, which fears becoming ?effeminate?. In this sense, I argue that, to a large extent, Western political philosophy is more imaginative and less conceptual than commonly admitted. With the Feminist Imagistic Reading, I highlight elements neglected by what I call the ?History of the Walking Mind Philosophy?: images, imagination, bodies, and women. As a counterpoint, I present the contributions of female philosophers such as Christine of Pizan, Marie of Gournay, Mary Astell, Catharine Macaulay, and Margaret Cavendish. These contributions reveal philosophical issues and problems that have been erased from the history of Western philosophy, especially those related to the ideas of patriarchal thought and the political counter-argumentation of female philosophers. This erasure not only marginalizes women from politics and philosophy but also impoverishes the very understanding of Western political philosophy. Therefore, the recovery and appreciation of these voices and bodies are important for a more complete, democratic, and creative perspective of the history of philosophy.
