Abstract

Dentes tratados endodonticamente são normalmente frágeis, necessitando de um reforço ao serem restaurados. Núcleos metálicos fundidos e pinos intra-radiculares metálicos, usados há muitos anos na restauração desses dentes, não reforçam a estrutura dental e podem levar a fraturas radiculares. A restauração de dentes tratados endodonticamente pode ser executada de forma direta ou indireta, e requerer ou não o uso de um dispositivo retentor intra-radicular, ou seja, pino intracanal. No entanto, a decisão, quanto ao tipo de tratamento ideal ou retentor intracanal a ser utilizado é complexa e difícil, envolvendo muitos fatores e varia significativamente de acordo com o caso clínico. São muitos os sistemas de pinos pré-fabricados disponíveis no mercado, e a correta escolha exige condições básicas, tais como: capacidade de retenção, indução, distribuições de tensões e a fácil manipulação destes. A indicação ou não de um pino intracanal está calcado em vário parâmetros, incluindo aí principalmente a posição do dente na arcada, a oclusão do paciente, a quantidade de estrutura dental remanescente e a configuração do canal. Recentemente, pinos intra-radiculares de fibras de carbono vêm sendo introduzidos no mercado, apresentando várias vantagens: adesão à estrutura dental e ao material de preenchimento, módulo de elasticidade próximo ao do dente natural, resistência corrosão, facilidade de remoção com brocas e solventes e o fato de permitirem um preparo mais conservador do dente.
