A revolução federalista em Lages: os conflitos, as alianças e os impactos da guerra na serra catarinense (1889-1897)

Abstract

Esta tese tem como objetivo compreender a Revolução Federalista em Lages, os conflitos a ela vinculados, as alianças estabelecidas e os impactos da Guerra Federalista nesse município, assim como em outros da Serra Catarinense. A Guerra Federalista desenvolveu-se nos primeiros anos da República no Brasil, momento de instabilidades políticas nos estados e, consequentemente, nos municípios. Em Lages, assim como no restante do Estado, não houve forte resistência à República. Os políticos que compunham até então principalmente o Partido Conservador e o Partido Liberal, nos anos seguintes, passaram a compor o Partido Republicano e o Partido Federalista, em uma articulação bastante semelhante às dos partidos no Império. Em Lages, destacou-se a família oligárquica Ramos e seus aliados, no Partido Republicano, e José Joaquim de Córdova Passos e seus aliados, no Partido Federalista. A mudança no regime político brasileiro, todavia, não representou alteração social, tendo sido a Primeira República marcada pelo coronelismo ? sistema de dominação encontrado no cenário estudado. A disputa política, originada no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, entre os aliados de Júlio de Castilhos e aqueles que se opunham ao seu governo, desenvolveu-se na região serrana de Santa Catarina, com ramificações locais. A construção deste trabalho se desenvolveu a partir da leitura de referenciais teóricos acerca dos temas que se ligavam ao objeto de estudo, analisando-os em cruzamento com as fontes históricas utilizadas como vestígios desse processo histórico. Entre as fontes que compõem esta tese destacam-se os periódicos Gazeta de Lages e Rebate, bem como diários e livros de memória de Ângelo Dourado, João José Theodoro Costa e Duarte Paranhos Schutel, todos contemporâneos dos eventos estudados. Lages, assim como alguns dos atuais municípios limítrofes, compunha um macroterritório político do Sul, o qual esteve ligado, ao longo do século XIX, por questões geográficas, econômicas e políticas. Essa relação desencadeou alianças entre políticos da Serra Catarinense e políticos sul-rio-grandenses. Foram apresentadas relações entre o coronel Thimóteo e Joaquim José de Córdova Passos, bem como entre Chicuta e Demétrio Ramos, federalistas que lutaram tanto no Rio Grande do Sul como em Santa Catarina. Constata-se que a Guerra Federalista na Serra Catarinense foi muito mais do que a passagem das colunas adversárias pela região. O conflito encontrou solo fértil com disputas políticas locais que construíram especificidades para a Guerra, culminando em fortes e violentos embates durante e depois da data convencional do conflito, estendendo-se, pelo menos, até 1897.

Abstract: This thesis aims to understand the Federalist Revolution in Lages (Santa Catarina, Brazil), the conflicts linked to it, the alliances established and the impacts of the Federalist War in this municipality, as well as in others in the Serra Catarinense. The Federalist War developed in the early years of the Republic in Brazil, a time of political instability in the states and, consequently, in the municipalities. In Lages, as in the rest of the state, there was no strong resistance to the Republic. The politicians who until then had mainly made up the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party, in the following years, began to make up the Republican Party and the Federalist Party, in an articulation quite similar to that of the parties during the Empire. In Lages, the oligarchic Ramos family and its allies, in the Republican Party, and José Joaquim de Córdova Passos and his allies, in the Federalist Party, stood out. The change in the Brazilian political regime, however, did not represent social change, with the First Republic being marked by coronelismo ? a system of domination found in the scenario studied. The political dispute that originated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul between Júlio de Castilhos? allies and those who opposed his government developed in the mountainous region of Santa Catarina, with local ramifications. The construction of this work was developed based on the reading of theoretical references on the themes that were linked to the object of study, analyzing them in conjunction with the historical sources used as traces of this historical process. Among the sources that make up this thesis, the newspapers Gazeta de Lages and Rebate stand out, as well as diaries and memoirs by Ângelo Dourado, João José Theodoro Costa, and Duarte Paranhos Schutel, all contemporary to the events studied. Lages, as well as some of the current neighboring municipalities, comprised a political macro-territory of the South, which was linked, throughout the 19th century, by geographic, economic and political issues. This relationship triggered alliances between politicians from the Serra Catarinense and politicians from Rio Grande do Sul. The relationship between Colonel Thimóteo and Joaquim José de Córdova Passos, as well as between Chicuta and Demétrio Ramos, federalists who fought in both Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, was presented. It is clear that the Federalist War in the Serra Catarinense was much more than the passage of opposing columns through the region. The conflict found fertile ground with local political disputes that created specificities for the War, culminating in strong and violent clashes during and after the conventional date of the conflict, extending at least until 1897.
