O massacre do corpo social pelo futuro da espécie: uma análise da obra O Conto da Aia e suas personagens femininas a partir das perspectivas da crítica feminista

Abstract

O presente trabalho pretende analisar a obra O Conto da Aia, da escritora Margaret Atwood, e suas personagens femininas Offred e Serena Joy. O objetivo principal da dissertação é analisar o enredo distópico apresentado e observar como as personagens são afetadas pelas restrições de direitos impostas às mulheres na nova sociedade quando Gilead é constituída, de acordo com as condições que são peculiares a cada uma delas. Os objetivos específicos serão: analisar a obra a partir da crítica feminista e dos estudos de gênero, além de compreendê-la a partir do gênero literário da ficção científica, seguindo uma vertente mais voltada à ideia de utopias e distopias; também pretende-se analisar como os conceitos de Panóptico, biopoder e biopolítica, conceitos analisados por Michel Foucault e outros estudiosos, são e aplicados à trama da obra. Será observado como a possibilidade de fertilidade ou infertilidade das personagens afetou a estrutura social de Gilead, principalmente quanto à divisão sexual do trabalho nos diferentes grupos de mulheres. A hipótese defendida no trabalho é demonstrar como as diferentes castas sociais foram criadas especificamente para atender a necessidade de forçar as mulheres ainda férteis a se dedicarem exclusivamente à concepção de crianças, enquanto Esposas e Marthas ficam com a outra parcela da divisão sexual do trabalho, que é a de cuidar dessas novas crianças e do ambiente doméstico. Mesmo as Esposas, que são de uma classe superior as outras, tiveram os seus direitos restringidos, e todos os diferentes grupos de mulheres sofrem algum tipo de opressão, geralmente voltado ao papel que exercem dentro dessa nova sociedade. Existem uma infinidade de fatores que irão influenciar a vida de uma pessoa, e quais direitos ela terá acesso. E um desses elementos divisórios é o gênero, um construto social que viabiliza a hierarquização entre mulheres e homens em uma sociedade, criando estereótipos de gênero padronizados, que seguem papéis pré-determinados, além de reforçar estruturas de poder que marginalizam a pluralidade de mulheres de diferentes formas, considerando que o papel de domínio e controle do corpo social é limitado aos homens. Deseja-se analisar as diversas formas de opressão que as personagens sofrem, advindas de variáveis como gênero, classe social, idade e capacidade fértil, dentro da sociedade criada em Gilead, e como esses conceitos estão entrelaçados com as ideias de sistema disciplinar e biopoder. Diante do enredo bem-estruturado que mostra uma sociedade distópica com problemas semelhantes aos nossos, o presente trabalho deseja analisar como isso pode servir como um alerta aos problemas que enfrentamos na nossa própria realidade.

Abstract: The present work intends to analyze the book The Handmaid's Tale, by the writer Margaret Atwood, and its female characters Offred and Serena Joy. The main objective of the dissertation is to analyze the dystopian plot presented and observe how the characters are affected by the rights' restrictions imposed on women in the new society when Gilead was constituted, according to the conditions that are peculiar to each one of them. The specific objectives will be: to analyze the work from the perspective of feminist criticism and gender studies, in addition to understanding it from the literary genre of science fiction, following a trend more focused on the idea of utopias and dystopias; it is also intended to analyze how the concepts of Panopticon, biopower and biopolitics, concepts analyzed by Michel Foucault and other scholars, are and applied to the plot of the work. It will be observed how the possibility of fertility or infertility of the characters affected the social structure of Gilead, mainly regarding the sexual division of labor in different groups of women. The hypothesis defended in the work is to demonstrate how the different social castes were created specifically to meet the need to force women who are still fertile to dedicate themselves exclusively to the conception of children, while Wives and Marthas are left with the other portion of the sexual division of labor, which is to take care of these new children and the home environment. Even the Wives, who are of a superior class to the others, had their rights restricted, and all the different groups of women suffer some type of oppression, generally related to the role they play within this new society. There are a multitude of factors that will influence a person's life, and what rights they will have access to. And one of these divisive elements is gender, a social construct that enables the hierarchization between women and men in a society, creating standardized gender stereotypes that follow predetermined roles, in addition to reinforcing power structures that marginalize the plurality of women from different forms, considering that the role of dominance and control of the social body is limited to men. We want to analyze the various forms of oppression that the characters suffer, arising from variables such as gender, social class, age and childbearing capacity, within the society created in Gilead, and how these concepts are intertwined with the ideas of disciplinary system and biopower. Faced with the well-structured plot that shows a dystopian society with problems similar to ours, the present work wants to analyze how this can serve as an alert to the problems we face in our own reality.
