Entre Verdade e Justificação: a busca pelo entendimento na história

Abstract

O objetivo desta dissertação foi investigar as teorias da verdade e a natureza de seus portadores-de-verdade, bem como analisar a epistemologia da História. Para isso, foram examinadas as Teorias da História de Leopold Von Ranke e dos Historiadores da École des Annales que tratam do conhecimento histórico, e as teorias da verdade, incluindo a correspondência, a coerência e o pragmatismo, além de sua aplicação aos portadores de verdade da História. A dissertação discute a objetividade na História, a natureza dos fatos históricos e a adequação das teorias da verdade ao conhecimento histórico. Argumenta-se que a busca pela verdade histórica impõe exigências epistemológicas que impossibilitam um conhecimento da História e diverge das concepções dos teóricos da área, tornando necessária uma epistemologia adequada à especificidade desse conhecimento. A hipótese defendida é que o conhecimento histórico não proporciona a verdade, mas um entendimento sobre o passado, conceito que confere maior flexibilidade e está de acordo com as perspectivas dos historiadores, uma vez que o conhecimento histórico está sujeito a revisão conforme novas investigações são conduzidas.

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the theories of truth and the nature of their truth bearers, as well as to analyze the epistemology of History. To achieve this, the dissertation examines the historical theories of Leopold von Ranke and the historians of the Annales School that address historical knowledge, alongside the theories of truth, including the correspondence, coherence, and pragmatist theories, and their application to the truth-bearers in History. The dissertation discusses the objectivity of History, the nature of historical facts, and the adequacy of the theories of truth to historical knowledge. It argues that the quest for historical truth imposes epistemological demands that hinder a complete knowledge of History and diverges from the views of theorists in the field, thus necessitating an epistemology suited to the specific nature of historical knowledge. The hypothesis proposed is that historical knowledge does not provide Truth, but rather an understanding of the past, a concept that allows for greater flexibility and aligns with historians perspectives, as historical knowledge is subject to revision as new investigations are conducted.
