(Fan)tasizing: BDSM and fantasy in Wattpad's erotic fanfiction

Abstract

O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar as representações das práticas BDSM como fantasias sexuais em fanfiction postadas no site Wattpad. Para tanto, uso estudos Queer como metodologia, apoiando-me em nomes como Robin Bauer, Gayle Rubin e Juana Maria Rodríguez. Traço uma linha que vai de fan studies ao BDSM para entender como o conceito de fantasia conecta os dois temas discutidos na pesquisa. Minha seleção de quatro objetos de análise, sendo duas fanfiction sobre celebridades e duas sobre personagens fictícios, possibilitou-me responder à minha principal questão de pesquisa no que diz respeito às histórias de personagens fictícios proporcionarem fantasias sexuais mais livres, enquanto as histórias de celebridades oferecerem fantasias éticas, especialmente no que diz respeito à abordagem do BDSM, suas regras e limitações. Descobri que tal preocupação com a ética na fantasia sexual vem dos leitores, mas não dos autores. Além disso, como fanfiction tende a ser um gênero de ficção exagerada, não achei incongruente que os autores não tenham decidido introduzir o BDSM de maneira didática ou ética. São reconhecidas as limitações desta dissertação quanto à falta de representatividade dos personagens retratados nas histórias.

Abstract: The objective of this research is to analyze the representations of BDSM practices as sexual fantasies in fanfictions posted on the website Wattpad. To do so, I dwell into Queer studies for my methodology, relying on names such as Robin Bauer, Gayle Rubin and Juana Maria Rodríguez. I trace a line from fan studies to BDSM to understand how the concept of fantasy connects both topics discussed in the research. My selection of four objects of analysis, being them two fanfictions about celebrities and two about fictional characters, made it possible for me to answer my main research question on whether fictional character's stories would provide wilder sexual fantasies while celebrity's stories offered ethical fantasies, especially regarding the approach to BDSM, its rules and limitations. I have discovered that such worry regarding ethicality in sexual fantasy comes from readers, but not authors. Furthermore, as fanfiction tends to be a genre of exaggerated fiction, I didn't find it incongruent that authors did not decide to introduce BDSM in a didactic manner or ethically. The limitations of this dissertation regarding the lack of representativity in the characters portrayed in the stories are acknowledged.
