Listening to the city for new urban imaginaries of care and connection

Abstract

This paper dialogues with the body of work that investigates ways of promoting new imaginaries of sharing and caring within the urban space. It brings together the concepts of imagination, urban imaginaries, and senses. It reflects on the features of design processes able to promote care that might inform new and regenerative relationships between human, non-human and more-than-human beings. Insights on this are drawn by looking at past activities of a long-term and exploratory research and design process that aimed at stimulating reflection on existing urban imaginaries, developing new relationships with the local environment and between human and more-than-human beings, and a renewed interest in co-creating new ones. Through reflecting on one of its activities, it points out the relevance of paying attention to senses, specifically sounds.

Este artigo dialoga com o corpo de trabalho que investiga formas de promover novos imaginários de compartilhamento e cuidado dentro do espaço urbano. Ele faz isso a partir dos conceitos de imaginação, imaginários urbanos e sentidos. O artigo apresenta uma reflexão sobre as características de processos de design capazes de promover uma cultura de cuidado que possa informar novas e regenerativas relações entre seres humanos, não-humanos e mais-do-que-humanos. Ideias emergem a partir da análise das atividades ocorridas como parte de um processo de pesquisa e design de longo prazo e exploratório, que visava estimular a reflexão sobre os imaginários urbanos existentes, desenvolver novas relações com o território e entre seres humanos e não-humanos, e um renovado interesse em cocriar novos. Ao refletir sobre uma de suas atividades, destaca-se a relevância de prestar atenção aos sentidos em processos de design, especificamente à audição.
