Abstract

Esta pesquisa propõe a tradução comentada de poemas contidos no livro Bicycles: Love Poems (2009) da escritora, ativista e professora afro-estadunidense Nikki Giovanni (1943 ? 2024). Para tanto, pretende-se com esta tese avolumar os estudos sob a ótica da crítica & tradução negro-feminista a partir do arcabouço dos estudos de tradução negra no Brasil, dos conceitos de ?escrevivência?, ?tradução escrevivente?, ?outsider within? e da noção de ?tecnologia do quiabo?. Segue-se, então, protocolos metodológicos relacionados à tradução comentada para tentar traçar um elo entre teorias, referências culturais e contextos sócio-históricos encontrados nos poemas, juntamente com a experiência de vida da escritora. A ênfase das análises recai sobre a tradução negro-feminista, reconhecendo a tradução como um ato político de intervenção, criatividade e visibilidade, cuja consideração pela subjetividade das tradutoras negras em afro-diáspora é essencial. Além disso, a realização crítica e atenta aos procedimentos estéticos da lendária escritora Nikki Giovanni serão percebidos a partir do mergulho em sua icônica carreira literária desde o sul dos Estados Unidos. Será traçado um diálogo com a trajetória ativista da poeta por meio de livros publicados, entrevistas, álbuns, performances, documentários, dentre outras plataformas digitais, a fim de proporcionar uma aproximação da literatura de Nikki Giovanni com a população leitora no Brasil. Além disso, a pesquisa também contou com o acesso de matérias jornalísticas e arquivos coletados no Amistad Research Center (Nova Orleans ? EUA). Esta tese justifica-se pela necessidade de expandir a recepção do legado de Nikki Giovanni a nível nacional, considerando, portanto, as traduções de seus poemas para o português brasileiro e o aprofundamento de sua poética.

Abstract: This research proposes an annotated translation of poems from the book ?Bicycles: Love Poems? (2009) by the Black-American writer, activist, and professor Nikki Giovanni (1943 ? 2024). Therefore, this dissertation aims to expand studies within the framework of Black-feminist criticism and translation, drawing from the field of Black translation studies in Brazil, the concepts of ?escrevivência?, ?escrevivente? translation, and the ?outsider within? as well as the notion of ?technology of okra?. It follows methodological protocols related to annotated translation to establish an engage between the theories, cultural references, and socio-historical contexts found in the poems, alongside the author?s life experience. The analytical emphasis lies on Black feminist translation, recognizing translation as a political act of intervention, creativity, and visibility, in which the consideration of the subjectivity of Black women translators within the African Diaspora is essential. Furthermore, a critical and attentive execution regarding the aesthetic procedures of the legendary Nikki Giovanni will be realized through an immersion into her iconic literary career, rooted in the Southern United States. A dialogue will be established with the poet?s activist trajectory through published books, interviews, albums, performances, documentaries, and other digital platforms, in order to foster a connection between Nikki Giovanni?s literature and the Brazilian reading public. Additionally, this research engaged with journalistic materials and archives collected at the Amistad Research Center (New Orleans ? United States). This dissertation is justified by the need to expand the reception of Nikki Giovanni?s legacy in Brazil, thus considering the translations of her poems into Brazilian Portuguese and the further exploration of her poetics.
