Para uma história social de O CORTIÇO

Abstract

O trabalho a seguir busca uma história social do romance O Cortiço. Tentamos mostrar como as complexas e diversas faces temporais do romance são interdependentes e que ganhamos conhecimento histórico e literário quando compreendemos melhor suas conexões entre si e com o tempo histórico. No primeiro capítulo, investigamos o romance como um produto material complexo produzido socialmente por literalmente milhares de pessoas, em especial seu autor, Aluísio Azevedo. No segundo, procuramos pelas relações do romance com as disputas políticas do seu contexto de produção e circulação iniciais. Por fim, no terceiro capítulo, discutimos o romance dentro do seu processo de produção e discussão enquanto obra de arte, bem como avançamos algumas análises críticas com vistas à compreensão histórica.

Abstract: The following work seeks a social history of the novel The Tenement. We try to show how the complex and diverse temporal faces of the novel are interdependent and that we gain historical and literary knowledge when we better understand their connections with each other and with historical time. In the first chapter, we investigate the novel as a complex material product produced socially by literally thousands of people, especially its author, Aluísio Azevedo. In the second, we look for the relations of the novel with the political disputes of its initial production and circulation context. Finally, in the third chapter, we discuss the novel within its production and discussion process as a work of art, as well as advance some critical analyses with a view to historical understanding.
