A representação narrativa da monstruosidade e o projeto narrativo de Wheat Beach

Abstract

Resistindo a tentativas de classificação, o monstro se porta como uma figura intersticial que ameaça o status quo e a compreensão da realidade quando aparece - surgindo comumente da interpretação do opressor acerca de um grupo oprimido. Esse caráter intersticial e ambíguo do monstro influencia na abjeção e no medo em relação a ele. Agindo como um guardião da fronteira, o monstro assusta quem visa cruzar limites impostos pela cultura. A associação do monstro à não-conformidade com padrões da sociedade influencia na autoidentificação da audiência - especificamente aqueles que também não se conformam com esses padrões - com o monstro, se apropriando dessa figura. No projeto narrativo de Wheat Beach, um personagem humano, representante dos padrões da sociedade ocidental, se encontra confuso e desesperado ao entrar em contato com três outros personagens, que são abertamente queer e secretamente monstros, e casualmente “vivem” os seus cotidianos sem maiores obstáculos. Em Wheat Beach, é buscada a representação da figura monstruosa em um contexto cotidiano e casual, em contrapartida a uma narrativa causal e maniqueísta, com uma figura heroica que exorciza o monstro e livra a sociedade da ameaça que este representa.

Resisting classification attempts, the monster behaves as an interstitial figure that threatens the status quo and the comprehension of reality when it appears - surging from the interpretation of an oppressor about an oppressed group. This interstitial and ambiguous property of the monster influences the abjection and fear regarding it. Acting as a gatekeeper, the monster freaks whoever aims at crossing limits imposed by culture. The association of the monster to non-conformity with societal standards influences the self-identification of the audience - especially those who also don’t conform to those standards - with the monster, appropriating its figure. In Wheat Beach’s narrative project, a human character, representative of western society’s standards, finds himself confused and desperate after meeting three other characters, who are openly queer and secretly monsters, and casually “live” their everyday “lives” without further issues. In Wheat Beach, the representation of the monstrous figure in a casual, everyday setting is pursued, in contrast with a casual manichean narrative, with a heroic figure that exorcizes the monster and purges the society of the threat that it poses.
