Beautiful houses, where are you: an analysis of the "Big House(ing)" crisis in Sally Rooney's novels

Abstract

Esta dissertação investiga o papel da habitação e sua influência nas relações interpessoais das personagens de Sally Rooney nos romances Conversations with Friends (2017), Normal People (2018) e Beautiful World, Where Are You (2021), com um foco específico na atual crise habitacional na Irlanda. Propõe-se que a representação dos espaços de moradia criados por Rooney transcende sua função de simples cenários, apresentando-os como elementos narrativos dinâmicos que moldam a vida das personagens ao mesmo tempo em que refletem temas de privilégio, disparidade social e precariedade econômica. Este estudo explora em que medida os romances de Rooney podem ser interpretados como engajados com características tradicionalmente associadas ao romance irlandês do tipo "casa grande", utilizando essas convenções como uma estrutura analítica para criticar hierarquias sociais contemporâneas e dinâmicas de poder. Com base em uma análise histórica e literária, emprega três perspectivas principais, quais sejam, feitiço, isolamento e senso de comunidade, derivadas do ensaio de Elizabeth Bowen sobre a "casa grande" (2015). Ao examinar o significado simbólico e material da habitação e sua conexão com a desigualdade de classes, este estudo ressalta como a ficção de Rooney aborda a crise habitacional na Irlanda, oferecendo novas perspectivas sobre como a literatura contemporânea reflete e critica realidades socioeconômicas.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the role of housing and its influence on interpersonal relationships of Sally Rooney's characters in the novels Conversations with Friends (2017), Normal People (2018), and Beautiful World, Where Are You (2021), with a specific focus on the ongoing housing crisis in Ireland. It proposes that Rooney's portrayal of dwellings transcends their function as mere settings, presenting them as dynamic narrative elements that shape characters' lives while reflecting themes of privilege, social disparity, and economic precarity. This study explores the extent to which Rooney's novels can be interpreted as engaging with traits traditionally associated with the Irish "big house" novel, using these conventions as an analytical framework to critique contemporary social hierarchies and power dynamics. Drawing on historical and literary analysis, it employs three key perspectives, namely, spell, isolation, and sense of community, derived from Elizabeth Bowen's essay on the "big house" (2015). By examining the symbolic and material significance of housing and its connection to class inequality, this study sheds light on how Rooney's fiction engages with Ireland's housing crisis, offering new insights into how modern literature reflects and critiques socio-economic realities.
