Entre paisagem, fortaleza e ruínas: a Ilha de Araçatuba e suas múltiplas representações

Abstract

A Ilha de Araçatuba, uma ilhota pedregosa situada no centro da barra do sul da Ilha de Santa Catarina, abriga as ruínas da Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, uma fortificação colonial do século XVIII. Sua paisagem de ruínas se integra imediatamente à natureza da barra, entre mar e morros. No entanto, a aparente serenidade desse cenário se desfaz diante da força intempestiva do ambiente. Essa percepção, enraizada no imaginário popular, é perpetuada por narrativas que mesclam acontecimentos reais e ficcionais, povoadas por mitos e lendas, em uma construção simbólica anterior à própria ruína do conjunto edificado. Este trabalho analisa as representações da Ilha de Araçatuba e da fortaleza ao longo do tempo, buscando compreender os significados atribuídos a esses espaços. A pesquisa investiga como diferentes registros construíram uma narrativa histórica e simbólica sobre a região, evidenciando a interação entre o meio natural, o contexto histórico e as transformações sociais. A abordagem adotada é interdisciplinar, reunindo cartografias, relatos de viagens, registros orais, iconografias, documentos históricos e projetos de restauro, obtidos em acervos físicos e digitais, além de pesquisa de campo. A análise dessas representações se fundamenta nas proposições da história cultural de Roger Chartier, permitindo uma compreensão ampliada da paisagem de Araçatuba como meio de acessar ?representações culturais?. Dessa forma, a ilha e seu entorno se configuram como espaços de memória e identidade. Ao organizar e interpretar essas representações, este trabalho contribui para os estudos sobre a Fortaleza de Araçatuba e a paisagem da barra do sul, além de fornecer um repositório sistematizado para futuras pesquisas.

Abstract: Araçatuba Island, a rocky islet situated at the heart of the southern inlet of Santa Catarina Island, is home to the ruins of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Fortress, an 18th-century colonial fortification. Its ruined landscape immediately merges with the natural surroundings of the inlet, nestled between the sea and the hills. However, the apparent serenity of this setting is unsettled by the untamed forces of nature. This perception, deeply rooted in the popular imagination, is perpetuated by narratives that intertwine real and fictional events, populated by myths and legends, forming a symbolic construct that predates the ruin of the architectural complex itself. This study examines the representations of Araçatuba Island and its fortress over time, seeking to understand the meanings attributed to these spaces. It investigates how various records have contributed to the construction of a historical and symbolic narrative about the region, highlighting the interaction between the natural environment, historical context, and social transformations. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the research brings together cartography, travel accounts, oral records, iconography, historical documents, and restoration projects, drawing from both physical and digital archives, alongside fieldwork. The analysis is grounded in Roger Chartier?s cultural history framework, allowing for an expanded understanding of Araçatuba?s landscape as a means of accessing ?cultural representations.? Thus, the island and its surroundings take shape as spaces of memory and identity. By organizing and interpreting these representations, this study contributes to research on the Fortress of Araçatuba and the southern inlet landscape, while also providing a structured repository for future investigations.
