Komunyakaa, Clarke, and Pereira: jazz, blues, and samba poetics

Abstract

Abstract : The present work investigates textual interweaving between jazz, blues,samba and Afro-Brazilian, Afro-American, and Afro-Canadian writing.The investigation concerns the commonality of experiences in theAfrican diaspora conveyed through the poetics of resistance and themeaning of each identities in such contexts. The study analyses theintertextuality between the poetry of Edimilson de Almeida Pereira,Yusef Komunyakaa, and George Elliott Clarke and the use of theelements of jazz, blues, and samba in their texts. The research presents atransnational analysis according to the theory of Paul Gilroy?s The BlackAtlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness. The analysis considerstradition and improvisation as relevant elements of the African diasporicexperience depicted through jazz, blues and samba and in theinterweaving of these genres with poetry.<br>

Este trabalho investiga os entrelaçamentos textuais do jazz, blues esamba na poesia de autores afrobrasileiros, afroamericanos eafrocanadenses considerando as experiências comuns da diásporaafricana e as poéticas de resistência e os significados de cada uma dessasidentidades nesse contexto. O estudo analisa a intertextualidade napoesia de Edimilson de Almeida Pereira, Yusef Komunyakaa e GeorgeElliott Clarke e o uso dos elementos do jazz, blues e samba nos textosdesses autores. A pesquisa apresenta um análise transnacional de acordocom a teoria do Atlântico Negro: Modernidade e Dupla Consciência dePaul Gilroy. A análise considera tradição e improvisação comoelementos relevantes da experiência afro-diaspórica presentes no jazz,blues e samba e no entrelaçamento desses gêneros musicais com apoesia.
