The immediate and lasting impact of the Radiohead's lyrics on OK Computer

Abstract

The present monograph will focus on the immediate and lasting impact of the lyrics of the band Radiohead on the album OK Computer, released in 1997. This work is informed critically and theoretically, by Adorno and Horkenheim’s (2023) notion of ‘culture industry’ and also podcasts, internet searches, listening to and watching interviews about the release of this important album by Radiohead. I will seek to understand the connection of its lyrics with the historical moment that was happening in England, highlighting how politics (Tagg, 1982) and technology (Sader, 1995), from this moment onwards, takes over the daily practices of all people. Stemming from interdisciplinary and reception studies frameworks, this study used bibliographical research as its working method carried out on reception studies, CDs, internet, newspapers, analysis of radio and TV interviews, book reviews and magazines. Our conclusion is that the album OK Computer was revolutionary in its genre-bending sound and in its prescient commentary on topics like sensory overload, consumerism, and the loss of meaning in a rapidly changing world.

O presente TCC será centrado na discussão sobre o impacto imediato e duradouro das letras da banda Radiohead no álbum OK Computer, lançado em 1997. As informações críticas e teóricas deste trabalho advém da noção de “indústria cultural”, de Adorno e Horkheimer (2023), mas também de podcasts, buscas na internet, ouvindo e assistindo entrevistas sobre o lançamento deste álbum importante do grupo Radiohead. Busco entender a ligação de sua poética com o momento histórico que acontecia na Inglaterra, destacando como questões políticas (Tagg, 1982) e questões tecnológicas (Sader, 1995) vão tomando conta das práticas diárias de todas as pessoas. A partir de abordagens interdisciplinares e dos estudos da recepção, este trabalho usou como método pesquisas bibliográficas realizada em CDs, internet, jornais, análise de entrevistas de rádio e TV, resenhas de livros e revistas. Conclui-se que o álbum OK Computer foi revolucionário por sua sonoridade que rompeu gêneros e por seus comentários perspicazes sobre temas como sobrecarga sensorial, consumismo e perda de sentido em um mundo em rápida mudança.
